Island Hospice Service (ISLAND) is a local non-governmental organisation (NGO), registration number W.O. 27/79 and stationed in Harare. It was established in 1979 as the first Hospice in Africa.
The initial objectives were to provide direct home-based palliative care and comprehensive bereavement counselling services topeople with a life-threatening illnessincluding the caregivers and family members. However, ISLAND soon expanded its activities beyond direct service care towards a community-based programme. This is in line with the vision of the organisation and the desire to spread the palliative care and bereavement concept to the whole country especially to the most underprivileged groups.
To provide physical, emotional, social and spiritual care and support, primarily at home and also in hospital, for patients and their families facing a life-threatening illness.
To provide a comprehensive, therapeutic service for the bereaved.
To provide training within the community and for professionals in the fields of palliative and bereavement care.
